The 2023 Bushranger Cup Results
The 2023 Cup started in classic fashion at The Cups Course at The Dunes Golf Links with a superb sunny afternoon and the golf course in great condition with fast greens. Things were tight early with just four shots between the top six teams, the 7th team 6 shots back and the 8th team trailing by 10…. seemingly out of it. Or were they? The defending champion Kelly Gang held a two-shot lead over The Canvas Town Mob with The Captain Moonlite Gang one further back and The Stringybark Creek Freaks bring up the rear. Saturday at Eagle Ridge was an intriguing day with challenging conditions causing a few problems and all hell broke loose on the scoreboard. Of the 16 pairs, just five scored in the 60s, nine scored in the 70s and two scored in the 80s. As it happened the team in last had two of the scores in the 60s to vault into contention and another team had the two scores in the 80s to sink like a stone! The rest of the teams had a mix of good, bad and average scores and, when the dust had settled, there was traditional BR Saturday night leader-board mayhem with just four shots separating the top three teams. This set up for yet another crazy last day ever at the BR Cup with The Keely one ahead of the Freaks who had jumped from last place and the Aaron Sherritt Gang that had moved from 4th to 3rd. On Sunday we had a perfect day for golf on the Legends Course at Moonah Links. To the uninitiated, everything looked normal, but as it was the Bushranger Cup all hell broke loose once again in the final round. With the benign conditions softening the course, it turned into a birdie blitz with teams going low all over the joint. There was just five shots between the best and worst scores with two 55s, two 56s, two 57s and two 60s. Of course things got crazy. Standing on the 17th tee, the Kelly Gang had lead wire-to-wire and the Freaks were two back. Then the Freaks birdied 17. On 18 the Freaks got pin high left with somewhere between 50 and 80 feet to go (depending on who you ask) and, of course, being the Bushranger Cup, they holed out for birdie (see below).
This left The Kelly Gang needing a birdie on 18 to win and the resulting par forced a playoff for the second time in Bushranger Cup history. Back to the first of the Legends Course we went, and thrilling foursomes golf was played. Bastros and T-Bag both smashed drives. Crocko played a remarkable long bunker shot. The Hominator responded with the 5-wood of his life, then Dr F-Tard played a freakish blind approach to give his team a look at birdie. The whole thing came down to a couple of putts and when the balls stopped rolling, the Freaks won by a whisker on the first playoff hole. Once again The Bushranger delivered drama, fun and excitement enough to blow the minds of all involved.
