The 2004 Bushranger Cup Results

The inaugural Bushranger Cup was held at the challenging 36-hole layout in Cobram-Barooga on the weekend of March 27, 28 and 29 2004. This haughty and absurd golfing adventure was the catalyst for many moments of high amusement, if not athletic brilliance. A fighting field of eighteen hearty men fronted on the Friday evening for what was to be a tumultuous first championship.

The Captain Moonlite Gang - The devious Andrew George Scott became the infamous Captain Moonlite when he began robbing banks in the 1870’s. The 2004 gang-members: Roger Brown, Mick David, Nick Honey and Matthew Pitt.

The Wild Colonial Boys - Emerging in the turbulent 1850’s, these were a new breed of Bushrangers. They were not escaped convicts but the sons of immigrants or colonial born youths with a contempt for authority and a desire for quick riches and adventure. The 2004 gang-members were: Marcus Jones, John Lazzara, James McCusker and Warwick Stonehouse.

The Canvas Town Mob - A rare city based mob of Bushrangers who operated in South Melbourne in the 1850’s. They would knock off ships at port and then frivolously drink and gamble away their booty. The 2004 gang-members were: Ian Crotty, Richard Thurkle, Mick Van Raay and Scott Wilson.

Cash & Co. - Martin Cash was known as the polite, gentleman Bushranger. His gang ranged in the 1840’s and allegedly escaped Port Arthur in Tasmania by swimming naked to the mainland. The 2004 gang-members were: Ed Borland, Russell Green, Sebastian Shand and Dominic Wall.

The Ben Hall Gang - Originally The Frank Gardiner Gang, it became known as The Gilbert Gang when Gardiner was captured in Queensland in 1861. Then it became known as the Gilbert & Hall Gang and later again the Ben Hall Gang. Their revolving door policy remains strong to this day. The 2004 gang-members were: Adam Finlay and Paul Hassing (and very nearly, but not quite including, The Great Ray Louey, Diamond Dave Kidd & Light Fingers Russ Gruen).
