The 2013 Bushranger Cup Results

The 10th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of February 8 - 10. This year we had eight teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champs are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang. The event details were:

When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday February 8, 9 & 10 2013
Where: The Cups, St. Andrews Beach & Moonah Links Legends
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying in Deluxe Villas at the Moonah Links Golf Academy.
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes

Sadly, a foundation Cuppers and past champion who had played every year, Bastros, could not make it this year. This means we had just five exclusive Bushrangers who have played every Cup. They are:

Boo, Crocko, Dee, Dubs & The Hominator.

Starting out at The Cups Course at The Dunes Golf Links, the scores were very even on day one with the closest spread of scores ever after the first day of a Cup. Every team was still well in contention with just eight shots between 1st and 8th place. The Stringybark Creek Freaks & the Friends of Mad Dog Morgan were tied on 7 under with the Harry Power Gang one back and the Aaron Sherritt Gang another shot back so there were two shots between the top four teams.

Saturday at St. Andrews Beach was an intriguing day of golf with just four pairs breaking par, a heap of pairs all around par or a little over and just one pair blowing out with a big score. Of the sixteen 2-ball ambrose pairs, one scored 5 under, one scored 9 over and the other 14 pairs were all bunched together between 1 under and 4 over. As it happened one of the leading teams had two pairs that each scored 1 under and they opened up a gap on the field after 54 holes. Behind them there was a logjam with the next five teams separated by just two shots.

When the dust had settled on Saturday, the Stringybark Creek Freaks had jumped out to a seven shot lead over second place but they had five teams chasing them with swoopers certain to make a move. Moreover, it was the Freaks themselves that came from seven shots behind to win in 2009 and history shows the Saturday night leader has a habit of being caught so with six teams in contention for the 2013 Bushranger Cup, the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish.

In the end, the tournament was one of the closest blanket finishes we have ever had with just five shots between the top five teams at the finish on Sunday. As predicted, the swoopers came with the Canvas Town Mob and the Aaron Sherritt Gang shooting 10-under and 9-under respectively to turn up the pressure on the leaders. After five holes of the front nine, the Freaks had racked up a couple of bogies and looked like they might get a wobble going on the bandwagon, but a steadying couple of clutch pars and a birdie on 8 put things right. They were able to close it out on the back nine to complete a solid round of nett five under and hold off all the challengers for a famous win.

Not only did the Freaks play some brilliant, consistent, spine-tingling and attacking golf over the three days, rumour has it that they embraced every element of the tournament and were the last to bed every night. They were at the pointy end of the fun on and off the golf course for the whole weekend which made this one of the great Bushranger Cup campaigns and one of the most elegant and memorable of victories in this glorious event.

Above we see the new Kelly Gang (Greg Cousins, Michael David, Tim Holroyd & Brett Simpson) hamming it up after receiving the greatest prize in Australian social golf - The Bushranger Cup.
