The 2011 Bushranger Cup Results
Starting out on the glorious front nine at The Portsa Golf Club, the scores were massive on day one with several Bushrangers struggling with the Portsea bunkers and attempting to emulate the bizarre Zark Bunker Blowout from 2010. The rounds were all played in good conditions with the weather threatening at times but never turning nasty, with sunshine on Friday, comfortable temperatures all weekend and just the odd zephyr of breeze for the ambrose rounds. The scoring on Friday was tight with no teams breaking par and just four shots separating the top four teams. The first round set the trend for the event with the top four teams battling it out over the weekend and none of the bottom three teams staging a comeback, as was the case in 2010 when the last placed team after day one fought back to finish runners-up. Scoring was easier on Saturday at The Dunes where the spread of two-ball scores ranged from nett 62 to 75 with plenty of birdies on offer and the conditions benign and pin positions accessible. After two days, 54 holes were completed and the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish with just two shots separating the top three teams and another team just four shots further back. In a bizarre twist, the bottom three teams were tied in fifth place on a total of 221. In the end, the tournament was the closest blanket finish we have ever had with the top three teams separated by only two shots and the championship came down to how the teams performed over the closing holes and on the 18th green. In the finish, it was The Captain Moonlite Gang that shot low round of the final day to swoop from third place to pinch the win. After a slow start with six pars in a row, they shot seven under over the final 12 holes to set up a dramatic win by a single stroke from The Aaron Sherritt Gang who had a birdie putt from about 10 feet feet on the final hole to force a playoff.
