The 2010 Bushranger Cup Results
|
The 7th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula, the scene of the ripping 2007 and 2009 Cups, and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of March 19, 20 & 21. This year we had seven teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champions are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers of all, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang. The event details were:
When: March 19, 20 & 21 2010
Where: The Cups, Moonah Links (Legends) & Cape Schanck.
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying at The Views Resort
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes
Sadly, this year a foundation Cupper, Master of the Cards, Scott Willo Wilson, fell under an injury cloud and couldn't get himself to pass a fitness test. This means we now have eight exclusive Bushrangers who have attended every Cup. They are, in no particular alphabetical order:
Arbeige, Bastros, Boo, Crocko, Da King, Dee, Dubs & The Hominator.

Starting out on the par 33 Cups Course at The Dunes Golf Links, the scores were extremely tight from the outset. The rounds were all played in near perfect conditions with the sun shining, comfortable temperatures and hardly a breath of wind until a testing breeze sprang up on the final day. The scoring on the Cups on Friday without wind was again very low and Rob Luggo Lugton had a day out and equalled the round one individual scoring record of nett 8-under par. After the first round, just two shots separated the top five teams and everybody was still in contention, as evidenced by the fact that the team in last place (and 11 shots back) eventually finished the tournament as runners-up.
Scoring was more difficult on Saturday at Moonah Links where most teams battled for birdies and many had their work cut out just scrambling pars. After two days, 54 holes were completed and the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish with just seven shots separating the top six teams. In the end, the tournament was the closest blanket finish we have ever had with the top six teams separated by only five shots and the championship came down to how the teams performed on the closing holes of the tournament. In the end, The Captain Melvilles brilliantly birdied the last two holes to steal the win by two shots. It wasn't smooth sailing for them - whereas other teams had jumped out of the blocks with early birdies, they could not get a birdie on the card in the first seven holes. But they hung tough and birdied 2 of the next nine holes before storming home with a birdie-birdie finish to clinch the Cup.
