The 2017 Bushranger Cup Results

The 14th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of March 31 - April 2. This year we stayed at The Views Resort at Cape Schanck and eight teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen lined up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champs are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang.
The event details were:
When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday March 31, April 1 & 2
Where: The Cups, Eagle Ridge & Cape Schanck
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying at The Views Resort at Cape Schanck
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes
This year none of the players joined the exclusive 10-Cups Club. This means we have nine exclusive Bushrangers who have played 10 Cups or more. They are:
Arbeige, Boo, Crocko, Dee, Dubs, Kingo, Quigley, The Hominator & The Rose.

Starting out at The Cups Course at The Dunes, the scores were very even on day one with just 10 shots between first and last place. The defending champs, The Kelly Gang, put together the best first round score to hold a 2-shot lead over The Cpt Moonlite Gang with The Canvas Town Mob another shot further back. Saturday at Eagle Ridge was an intriguing day of golf with just 10 shots between the best and worst scores and 14 of the 16 pairs all shooting between 67 and 74 on the par 72 layout.
After three rounds we had 16 shots between first and last places and just 6 shots between the first four teams with the top three seperated by just two shots. Bushranger Cup history shows that the Saturday night leader has a habit of being reeled in so with five teams in contention for the 2017 Bushranger Cup, the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish.
In the end, all eight teams came out firing on Sunday with just six shots between the best and worst scores – a spread of 56 to 62 on the par 69 layout. The final result saw just 16 shots between first and last and just two shots between the top three teams. As predicted, the swoopers came and some brilliant golf was played to produce four scores in the 50’s. When the dust had settled, it was the The Captain Melvilles two-shots clear after a superb bogey-free final round. It was a triumph of consistency and teamwork with the Melvilles never shooting the best socre on any of the days, but posting very solid numbers in all four rounds to secure a brilliant victory.
