The 2016 Bushranger Cup Results

The 13th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of March 18 - 20. This year we had nine teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champs are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang.

The event details were:

When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday March 18, 19 & 20 2016
Where: The Cups, Rosebud CC and Moonah Legends

What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying in Deluxe Villas at the Moonah Links Golf Academy.
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes

This year we had another Bushranger Cup Champion join the 10-Cups Club as the great Gavan “The Rose” Doran saddled up for the 10th time. This means we have nine exclusive Bushrangers who have played 10 Cups or more. They are:

Arbeige, Boo, Crocko, Dee, Dubs, Kingo, Quigley, The Hominator & The Rose.

The 2016 Cup started in dramatic fashion on The Cups Course at the Dunes with a very windy day that saw gusts of up to 80 to 90 km/hour. Our Bushrangers hung tough to post some decent scores in very challenging conditions. Things were tight early with just nine shots between the top 8 teams and one straggler three shots further back. The Stringybark Creek Freaks & The Captain Melvilles shared the honours for the best first round score to hold a 4-shot lead over The Canvas Town Mob.

Saturday  at The Rosebud Country Club was an intriguing day of golf with just one great round of 6-ounder 65 and all the rest of the field was packed tight with just 6 shots searating the other 15 pairs – all of them shooting between 68 and 74 on the par 71 layout. As it happened, for the second year running, The Captain Melvilles had two pairs that each scored well and they opened up a gap on the field after 54 holes with a four-shot lead over two teams in second place and another mob four more shots back in fourth. Last year an nine-shot lead was chased down, so there were still four teams clearly in contention going into the final day and the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish.

On Sunday the sun was shining and the wind had died to a mere zephyr and all hell broke loose at Moonah Links. Every team made birdies and every team scored between 58 and 66. Moreover, two of the leading for teams shot 65 & 66 and opened the door forthe swoopers to make a late charge. When the scorer had set down his abacus there was 1 shot bwetween the top three teams and we had a tie for the first time in Bushranger Cup history with The Captain Melvilles and The Kelly Gang both locked on 265 and the The Harry Power Gang unlucky to be  a single shot further back.

The rules of the Bushranger Cup state: Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a sudden-death playoff will be conducted. Teams play together as a foursome (taking alternate strokes playing one ball). Once established on the first hole, the order is continuous and carries over from one hole to the next until the playoff is decided. So it was time for sudden-death playoff and the greatest golf event in the universe went to another level.

With a large gallery in attandence, the eight courageous souls in the playoff saddled up for the ride of their life. In a tension-packed, knuckle-whitening, throat-tightening, jodhpur-stretching, fist-pumping, knee-rattling, bladder-squeezing tumlut of frenzied insanity, the playoff began. To follow every shot as it happened, go to the Bushranger Golf Facebook Album of the 2016 Bushranger Cup Playoff to see over 200 photos in sequence of every nerve-tingling moment of excitement.

The first hole was hlaved in bogies. The second hole was halved in double bogies and on the third hole of sudden death, a double-bogey from The Captain Melvilles was enough to clinch the win against a triple bogey from The Kelly Gang. Never have so many endured so much for so few and been so honoured. Everyone who was there will never forget it and the myth of The Bushranger Cup has been taken to an entirely new level. Thanks to all the teams who played, congrats to the teams who played well and enjoyed the spoils and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Above we see the new Kelly Gang (Sebastian Shand, Ian Crotty, Ian Steer & Gavan Doran) basking in the
glow of their mighty victory after receiving the greatest prize in Australian social golf - The Bushranger Cup.
