MT_08_POY_bottle_home.JPG

The last BRG Victorian Handicap Day for 2008 at Yarra Bend on December 13 supplied a thrilling finish to the inaugural BRG Player of the Year (BRG POY). Above we see one of the crowns in his booty of prizes - the personalised commemorative bottle of Bushranger of the Year Shiraz. To read more, see the Dec 15 News Item, the Player of the Year page or the Dec 13 Handicap Day Results.

Settlers Run Handicap Day shapes close BRG POY finish

Crocko___wheat___home.JPG

The 10th 2008 Victorian Bushranger Golf Handicap Day at Settlers Run south east of Melbourne on Sunday November 16, had a huge bearing on the race for the inaugural Bushranger Golf Player of the Year (BRG POY). The event was stableford with prizes and POY points up for grabs and most of the field spent a good part of the day in the long grass looking for balls. Above, we see Ian Crotty (and some of the local wheat) who finished equal 2nd to keep his POY chances alive, loading up on the tee of the long par four 15th hole. For more info on all the action, see the November 17 News Item or go straight to the November 16 Handicap Day results page.

Arbeige & Dee go B2B at The 2008 William Buckley Classic

B2B_champs_1.JPG

For the second year running, Roger Brown and Michael David have triumphed in the William Buckley Classic by the narrowest of margins. In 2007, they won at 13th Beach Golf Links by a single shot from the 2006 champions, Seve and Da King. This year, the event was played at Cape Schanck and The Legends Course at Moonah Links. At the finish, just four shots separated the top four teams and the reigning champions held on by a single shot when Arbeige holed a Danny De Vito (a nasty little 5-footer) on the final hole to clinch the title. For more info, check out the 2008 WBC Results page. In 2009, the William Buckley Classic will return to the 13th Beach Golf Links in Barwon Heads.

On Saturday November 22, the final of the Victorian Social Golf Club Championships (VSGCC) was played at Eynesbury golf course after five months of intense competition and four gruelling Qualifying Rounds. When the dust had settled, it was the Thunderbolts from Bushranger Golf that prevailed to take the Championship in it inaugural year. Above we see an image from the second Qualifier played at Waterford Valley in July. The golfer is Noel Tuck from Nunawading SGC playing his recovery shot from the marshy reeds on the par 4 third hole.

It worked out well for Noel as he went on to shoot the equal 2nd best score for the day and guide his team to third place to qualify comfortably for the final. The VSGCC is a contest between teams of four representing their social golf club competing for the title of Victorian Champions. For more info on the win at the final, see the November 24 News Item or go straight to the VSGCC website to find out how to enter the event in 2009. The event is supported by Golf Australia, The VGA and WGV and there were more than $11,000 of prizes are up for grabs in 2008.

Above we see Larry, Minotaur, Arbeige & Pw Jones, champions of the 2008 Bushranger Cup, the toughest social golf event in all the land. For all the dirt on how these rogues won their second Cup, click on the news item (April 14) or go directly to the 2008 BC Results page.

The inspiration for Bushranger Golf was the very social golf event, The Bushranger Cup. The tournament was founded in 2004 for teams of four players to enjoy testing their golf wits, skill, course management, temperament and, most importantly, jocularity. As is the tradition, the reigning champions play the event as "The Kelly Gang", being the most recent and most famous of all Bushrangers. To read all about the golf gangs and their on- and off-course management skills, have a look through  the Golfers page with profiles on Bushranger Golfers from all our tournament programs. The  date and venue for The 2009 version of this premier social golf event will be announced very soon. Below are some more words of wisdom from our new Great Golf Quotes page in The Campfire.

“Go out and have fun. Golf is a game for everyone, not just for the talented few.” - Harvey Penick
