Bushranger Golf Victorian Player of the Year

The BRG Player of the Year (POY) is an annual award for the Best & Mostest Bushranger for the year. A BRG Vic POY Perpetual Trophy has been created by founding member Arbeige and, at the end of the year, the Bushranger Golf member who has accumulated the most points on offer in official open BRG events in Victoria will be presented with the trophy and prizes at a gala presentation after the final Handicap Day. Inspired in 2007 by a suggestion from BRG member Richard Fellner, 2008 was the first year this prestigious award was presented.

Although similar to an order of merit, the guiding principle for the BRG POY is to reward regular attendance and consistent performance in BRG events throughout the year. The point scoring format has been carefully calibrated to reflect this and is a blatantly transparent effort to foster a close race for the POY title. This means it is possible for players who don’t win an event during the year to still have a shot at winning the POY. This approach is in the interests of sharing the glory among as many Bushrangers as possible and in the hope that a large number of members will remain in POY contention for as long as possible.

POY Rules

  • As we have an increased number of events, in 2012 players a change will be made to Top 6 Rule and players will score points for their top 10 performances throughout the year.
  • Points are awarded in ascending order from 15 - 1 to the top 15 place-getters in each event: 1st = 15 points, 2nd = 14 points and so on.
  • Points count for each player’s top 10 performances throughout the year. Hence, a player who scores placing points in more than 10 events only receives the points for their best 10 finishes.
  • Players tied in a placing each receive the points for that place. Eg:

1st - 15 points

= 2nd - 14 points

= 2nd - 14 points

4th - 12 points

= 5th - 11 points

= 5th - 11 points

7th - 9 points

= 8th - 8 points

 = 8th - 8 points

10th - 6 point1

  • To reward regular attendance, one extra point is awarded to every player per event entered.
  • In the event of a tie or ties, all the winners will be considered equal players of the year and be obliged to share the glory of the title.
  • The end of year prize pool will be allocated from 1st to 10th place. Whereas players with equal points will share the title of Player of the Year, tie-breakers will be used to separate the prize pool.. If two players are tied on points, the player with the most entry points wins the higher prize. If the players have also received the same number of entry points, the player with the highest total number of points (including those points beyond their top six placings) will receive the higher prize. If players are still tied ofter this, the player with the most 1st placings (then 2nd placings and so on) will receive the higher prize. If they are still tied, the prizes will be divided and shared between the players at the discretion of BRG.
  • Below are some examples of the points allocation system.
Player One enters 12 events and places 1, 2 ,3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16 & 19

Player One receives 10, 9, 8, 6, 4 & 3 for their best 6 placings and 12 points for entry in 12 events, for a total of 52 points.

Player Two enters 8 events and places 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8

Player Two receives 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 & 5 for their best 6 placings and 8 points for entry in 8 events, for a total of 53 points.

Player Three enters 6 events and places 1, 1, 2, 2, 4 & 5

Player Three receives 10, 10, 9, 9, 7 & 6 for their best 6 placings and 6 points for entry in 6 events, for a total of 57 points.

Player Four enters 10 events and places 2, 2 ,3, 3, 4, 4, 7, 9, 11 & 15

Player Four receives 9, 9, 8, 8, 7 & 7 for their best 6 placings and 10 points for entry in 10 events, for a total of 58 points.

POY Terms & Conditions

  • Only BRG members are eligible to accrue points. If a non-member places in an event, the points pass down to the next BRG member and so on.

  • The event runs for a calendar year – BRG events from January to December.
  • Only official open events on the BRG tour count towards POY points. These are the designated Handicap Days on the annual event schedule, the Cash & Co Classic, the Kelly Gang Shootout and the William Buckley Classic.
  • Only players with official handicaps or members in the process of acquiring a GAA Golf Handicap through BRG (& hence known to the BRG handicapper) are eligible to receive placing points in Handicap Day events.
  • If there are less than 15 competitors in an event, the points are awarded down to the last placed player.
  • A BRG member who does not have a handicap is still eligible to receive entry points for attendance.
  • Eligibility, points awarded, event results, prizes awarded, membership and POY results are all at the sole discretion of Bushranger Golf.
  • Bushranger Golf reserves the right to amend, alter or revise the conditions of entry, the prize pool, membership status and event results without notice.
