The 2020 William Buckley Classic (v 2.0) – Nov 14 & 15

2020 Re-scheduling – As you may have noticed, COVID-19 has played a little havoc with a few things this year. After a while, it became clear that the original October dates planned for this event were not possible. We have re-scheduled for November with accommodation included. Two important elements to note are:

  • If the event needs to be re-cancelled or re-re-scheduled due to Covid restrictions, all golfers will receive full refunds.
  • If the restrictions at the time of the event mean that we can play golf but not use the accommodation, then:
    • We will proceed with the event with the accommodation component removed, and
    • All golfers will receive a full refund of $165 for the reduced entry price with the accom removed.
    • Golfers can withdraw from the event if they do not wish to play without the accommodation

We are all monitoring the situation and the case numbers on a daily basis and we will keep all entrants informed of the situation as more information comes to hand.

After playing on the Bellarine Peninsula in 2019 (near where Buckley lived for decades), this year we return again to the Mornington Peninsula to play the courses near where Buckley first escaped in 1803. The 2020 event (the fifteenth annual WBC) is on the weekend of November 14 & 15 and will be played at Moonah Links (Legends Course) on Saturday and Moonah Links (Open Course) on Sunday.

The WBC is for teams of two players and the format is an exciting blend of 2-ball ambrose and stableford over 36 holes of golf. Entries as teams of two is encouraged in the WBC; however, singles can be matched together into teams. Bushrangers ride in luxury golf carts all the way to assist with coping with the rigours of the off-course activities.

For those wishing to extend the weekend to three days of golf, there will be an extra singles comp played on a course on the Mornington peninsula on the Friday afternoon – details of this event will be available soon. The WBC is an open event that anyone can enter - to join this great weekend of fun, simply Click here to book for the 2020 WBC.

The Event Format

The William Buckley Classic is a two-man team event. Each player is assigned a handicap relative to the rest of the field, which is used to calculate the team handicaps. The format is two-player-best-ball-ambrose-stableford. Each team plays two ball ambrose and accumulates stableford points according to their assigned team handicap. The competition is played over two 18-hole rounds: one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The team with the best score after 36 holes is the winner.

Round One: From 9:10am Saturday at Moonah Links (Legends)

Round Two: From 9:00am Sunday at Moonah Links (Open)

Dress Requirements

Bushrangers should note that the courses require neat casual dress on the golf course. This means shirts with a collar, slacks and tailored shorts. Alas, no denim is permitted on course. So don’t bring ripped clothing, rock'n'roll gear, board shorts or generally shabby attire to wear while golfing your ball. What you do in your own room is up to you. Golf shoes must have soft spikes.

Some Tournament Details

The Format: is ambrose best-ball played between teams of two.

The Rules: Since slow play is a potential problem for our gangs, these rules are designed to encourage play in the right spirit and at the right pace. Teams play their chosen best ball on each shot and may place their ball half a club length (about 50cms) from where the chosen ball lay, no nearer the hole. Balls must be placed in the same cut as the chosen ball. In the interests of fast play from tee to green, teams are NOT required to mark with a tee and precisely measure from the chosen ball as they play each shot. Team members can play in any order on a shot. Putting: Once on the green, Bushrangers should mark near the chosen best ball so both team members play from near enough to the exact same position.

Handicapping: Each team will be assigned a handicap by the organisers on the basis of official handicaps and information supplied by the Bushrangers. The handicapper will be governed by a commitment to rewarding good play according to a player’s ability.

Playoffs: In the event of a tie, a sudden-death playoff will be conducted. Teams play together as a twosome (taking alternate strokes playing one ball). Teams can determine the order as each member takes their first shot. This order is then continuous and carries over from one hole to the next until the playoff is decided.

Nearest-the-Pin & Longest Drive: will be held as some tasty ‘side action’ between teams.

The Rodeo Rule: This is minimum drives for each team member and will be enforced. Each team’s rodeo requirements will appear on their scorecard.
