The first Bushranger Golf Handicap Day for 2009 was held at Eynesbury Golf Course in hot conditions in the middle of the heatwave baking southeastern Australia. Coming off a string of days over 40 degrees, the weather remained relatively civilised, only reaching a top of 32 degrees. It was in stark contrast to the last time Bushrangers took to Eynesbury when player's battled arctic conditions in November for the Final of the Victorian Social Golf Club Championships (VSGCC). After looking during the week like having a field of more than 24 marauding rogues, a few of the more timid Bushrangers pulled out late in the piece, leaving just 17 hardy souls to take on the challenging Eynesbury layout in the very thirsty conditions. Plenty of players made strong starts but quite a few struggled to tame the back nine (this correspondent included) when the wind picked up in the early afternoon. In the finish, new Bushranger member John Hearne was the only player to master the course and the conditions and break par with a stellar round of 42 stableford points. In second was 2007 Bushranger Cup Champion Michael Nolan (named The Gasometer after his namesake) and in the third place there was a total logjam with four players tied on 34 stableford points. Warwick "Boo" Stonehouse took the 3rd place prizes on count-back and fellow BRG members Mark Gemmola and Shane Roberts shared in the 3rd place points in the BRG Player of the Year. Guest Stephen Wright basked in the glory of sharing third place but scored neither prizes nor POY points for his efforts. The final results are below and the standings for the 2009 BRG POY have been updated.
